The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office has concluded its search for human remains in a field south of Cheyenne, following a discovery made earlier this week. The search was initiated after a construction worker, mowing a field north of Terry Road on Monday, found human remains, prompting a thorough two-day search.
Laramie County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Aaron Veldheer stated on Thursday that the search, which involved 50 officials systematically combing the area in grid patterns, was completed by the end of Tuesday. “We have wrapped [the search] up,” Veldheer told Cowboy State Daily. “All that we could find” of the body was recovered, and the remains are now in the custody of the Laramie County Coroner’s Office.
The coroner’s office, in coordination with a forensic anthropologist, will work to identify the remains. Veldheer did not provide a timeline for the identification process, stating, “We’re going to patiently wait for them.”
Details such as the deceased’s age, sex, and how long the body had been in the field remain undisclosed as the investigation is ongoing. Veldheer mentioned that evidence such as dental records and healed bone fractures could aid in the identification.
While identifying the body is not the sheriff’s office’s immediate priority, it is crucial for advancing the investigation. Veldheer indicated that the cause of death is not yet clear, and it is uncertain whether the individual died at the scene or was moved there. The discovery was not the result of the mower running over the remains, as the worker reportedly spotted a body part before reaching the area with the machine.
Veldheer expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by search teams and the understanding shown by the community, acknowledging that this investigation could take time. “Our goal is to find closure for this individual and their family,” he said.
Laramie County Coroner Rebecca Reid has not yet commented on the case.
