Thomas H. Netherton Jr., Beloved Singer and Vietnam Veteran, Passes Away at 70

Thomas H. Netherton Jr., 70, passed away on January 7, 2018, at the VA Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, after complications from the flu, which developed into pneumonia and ultimately claimed his life. Tom was born on January 11, 1947, in Munich, Germany, to Major Thomas H. Netherton, Sr. and Lillian Christensen Netherton.

Raised in Bloomington, Minnesota, where his family settled after his father retired from the Army, Tom Jr. went on to serve his country during the Vietnam War. He enlisted in the United States Army, completing Basic Training at Fort Bliss, Texas, where he earned the Trainee of the Cycle Award and the prestigious Spirit of Honour Medal for outstanding leadership, a recognition given to only one soldier in the Brigade.

After completing Advanced Infantry Training, Tom was accepted into Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Upon completing the grueling 12-week program, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and assigned to Panama, where he served as Commander of the 1542 Infantry Unit, eventually rising to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. During his time in Panama, Tom often sang for the troops, with his performances broadcast on the Voice of America, the Army’s non-military radio network.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Tom followed his passion for music and embarked on a successful singing career. His talent earned him an audition with Lawrence Welk, leading to a long-running role on the Lawrence Welk Show. He also enjoyed a successful career in Christian music, recording 13 albums and authoring an autobiography titled β€œIn the Morning of My Life.” His music and personality garnered him a devoted fanbase, and he remains a beloved figure among many.

Tom is survived by his mother, Lillian Netherton; his brother, Brad (Paula) Netherton; and his sisters, Julie (Bruce) Kobielush and Wendy Siebold. Those who knew him fondly remember his wit, sense of humor, and generosity.

Tom’s legacy, both in music and service, continues to be cherished by family, friends, and his many fans.
