In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, harrowing tales of survival and desperation are emerging. A father fled in his Jeep as rising waters engulfed his home, a teacher clung to a mattress-turned-raft as her house was swept down the river, and a man was trapped on his apartment balcony, crying out for help.

These individuals are among the hundreds still unaccounted for in the Southeast, where Helene has wreaked havoc, becoming the deadliest hurricane to hit the United States mainland in over two decades. As of Friday, at least 213 people have lost their lives across six states due to the storm’s destructive path.

Families of those missing remain hopeful that their loved ones are not among the increasing death toll. The search for missing persons continues, with responders navigating washed-out highways, damaged bridges, bloated rivers, and flooded communities. Efforts are further complicated by ongoing cellular service issues, making communication challenging.

The exact number of missing individuals remains unclear. FEMA is actively collaborating with state and local officials to determine the total, according to Administrator Deanne Criswell in an interview with CNN’s Jim Acosta on Wednesday. Meanwhile, anxious relatives are tirelessly searching for their missing loved ones.

A concerned individual recently posted on the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, stating, “How do we get help finding missing family in the area? My brother is missing.” Such desperate pleas have flooded social media in the wake of the disaster.
